San Antonio has long been thought of as a haunted city. Psychics say about one in 10 homes, old or new, in San Antonio are haunted, wrote Docia Schultz Williams in her book, “When Darkness Falls.” Becuase of these thrilling claims of spooks and chills, San Antonio is home to a number of great Haunted Houses & Ghost tours.
Just because you’re looking for a spooky thrill doesn’t always mean you’ll find one. Unless, that is, you look in the right places. And we have just the places. Below is a list of haunted houses guaranteed to amp up the fear … and fun. Just step into the darkness — if you dare.
Terror Mansion
Run. Crawl. Scream. Do whatever it takes to get through the mazes winding through the 23 rooms in this two-story mansion, just north of downtown. No one will hear you scream anyway, they warn. Don’t go alone.
Nightmare on Grayson
Decades before the famous River Walk was extended north and the Pearl Brewery was repurposed into a decidedly sane and urban chic hub around the River Walk’s new terminus, there was the frightful and fun Nightmare on Grayson just across the street. Now 22 years old, this house of horrors is a San Antonio tradition.
Ripley’s Haunted Adventure
Some say spirits from the bloody 1836 siege of the Alamo, in what was the most famous battle of the Texas Revolution, wander the grounds to this day. But that could be the least of your worries when you walk into Ripley’s Haunted Adventure, located where the Alamo’s west wall once stood. Be ready for bone-chilling special effects.
The 13th Floor
Discover why the legend of the 13th floor is one of the world's greatest mysteries. Enter an elevator that takes you on a ride through the 13th floor. Visit the occupants who call it their "home" and witness the oddities and strange occurrences. The 13th Floor is an intense, graphic, theatrical show that will take you on a gut wrenching ride of visceral thrills and psychological horror.
When this building was renovated, the skeleton of a woman was found. Apparently, the woman had been raped and killed by a mob of Spanish soldiers. Since the discovery of the skeleton the woman’s spirit has been said to haunt the premises.
While on the way home, a bus full of first and second graders broke down while driving across these railroad tracks. Rather than going to look for help, the driver told the children to get off the bus and push it across the tracks; they were struck down by a train. Now it is said that if one drives to the site and puts the car in neutral, it will be pushed over the tracks. Allegedly if one spreads baby powder on the back of the car before going to the site, he will see fingerprints
While constructing the stonework on this mission, a stonemason fell madly in love with the maid of the building. The woman fell ill, however, and soon died. In her honor, a rose window was built and the stonemason constructed an elaborate memorial to surround it. The maid is now sometimes seen in the window.
This hotel is supposedly the most haunted in the San Antonio metropolitan area. The first of many ghosts is a maid, who was murdered many years ago, and now wanders the upper hallways. Another ghost is that of lady, who is said to have died of a broken heart. Many have reported seeing her in one of the upper rooms of the hotel. The ghost of former President Teddy Roosevelt, who frequented the bar to recruit soldiers for his "Rough Riders" has also been seen.
The defenders of this famous fort are said to roam the grounds frequently.

The Alamo Ghost Hunt Tour, our evening tour, was voted one of the top ghost tours in America 2009. We were also the most broadcasted Ghost Tour in San Antonio 2006-2009. We visit 13 different haunted locations. Why are these areas and buildings thought to be haunted today? The answer would be the amount of fast and brutal deaths that have taken place in the very locations we visit on the tour. This tour does not stay very long at one location. This is a fast pace high action tour. You will visit hanging trees, old cemeteries, and haunted hotels, along with places where people are entombed in the walls. You will stand in the very place where men, women and children begged for their lives while having their heads removed for fun and revenge. Feel the energy from those who remain behind today. These spirits remain from heroes and murderers, along with your average men, women and children, all with the same thing in common: to linger behind in death.
